Abstract

Business Intelligence (BI) tools have become essential for organisational decision-making and performance optimisation. Despite significant investments in BI technologies, adoption rates remain persistently low, with usage patterns varying considerably across organisations. This systematic literature review examines current research on BI tool usage patterns in organisations, synthesizing findings from 2019 to 2024. The review reveals that BI adoption rates have stagnated at approximately 25-35% of the organisational workforce, despite technological advances making tools more user-friendly. Key usage patterns identified include functional variation, with finance and marketing departments demonstrating the highest adoption rates; user-type differentiation, where executive-level users focus on strategic dashboards while operational staff utilise standard reports; and temporal evolution, with organisations progressing from basic reporting to predictive analytics. Critical factors influencing usage include organisational factors such as top management support and organisational readiness, technological factors including system integration and data quality, individual factors encompassing digital literacy and analytical thinking skills, and environmental factors like competitive pressure. The findings indicate that 67% of the global workforce has access to BI tools, yet 70-80% of corporate BI programs fail to deliver expected value. This paper contributes to understanding BI tool usage patterns and provides a framework for assessing organisational BI adoption effectiveness
